siem reap and the temples of angkor

some things never live up to expectation. say, martin scorsese's next film or expensive red wine. world famous things have a hard time living up to things too, but not in this town.

angkor wat, angkor thom, bayon, pre rup, terrace of elephants, north gate, victory gate, kbal spean... the list goes on and on. it is difficult to describe these places without lapsing into cliches. some temples are "lichen flecked" others "look like the set of hollywood movies". they are "mystical" "breathtaking" "awe-inspiring" "gobsmacking" and hundreds of other superlavitves that i can't think of. and the thing is, the thing about all these 1000 year old buildings is that is it all very very true. they are all of the about and much more.

other things i like about cambodia is the food. it's like thai food but not ridiculously spicy and with no noodles. god bless coconut and lemongrass.

homeless children begging on the street. you can't save them all can you? unless you're angelina jolie and then you have a fighting chance. should i buy his or her water to hopefully feed that child and perhaps their family? or should they really be at school and i shouldn't promote this behaviour?

off the battambang tomorrow. by boat.

sound hotter in nagoya than cambodia! at least the mornings and evenings are cool here.

enjoy the sumo.

ps. i met a tajimi student in siem reap. we were sitting at an adjoining table in a restaurant! what are the chances! i had seen him for nearly 2 years and can barely remember his name. masahide or masahiro or something like that. was level 4, has small feet and was civil servant or works for city hall. nice chap.
