Doves

Review of Brixton gig last night... not really a review, I've never written a gig review and I hardly ever read them. I'm not a big Doves fan either, though I'm a bigger one now after this gig. I couldn't even name the band members, but I know they (some of them) used to be in a band called Sub Sub... here's the setlist:

Pounding
Here Comes the Fear
Sea Song
Rise
Catch The Sun
Satellites
Words
The Man Who Told Everything
The Last Broadcast
Where Where Calling From
NY
A House
Caught By The River
Cedar Room
-----------------------------
encore:

Firesuite
Here It Comes
Spaceface

They played some songs with guitars and drums. They were good songs and made me want to move my body in time with the music. You had to be there really. The end.

(PS: Brixton Academy is a great place to see bands. The floor slopes upwards, so everyone can see the stage no matter where they stand. That means no tiptoeing, no craning of the neck, no small people on shoulders, just a clear view of the band. From where I was, the sound was also amazing. One of the advantages of using old theatres for gigs is knowing the sound will reverbrate around the auditorium. When they started playing Pounding, the sounds were already crashing around me, then they played the only Doves song I knew, Fear, which was just fantastic. The crowd was a mix of indie kids and trendies. We had young Susanna and Trinny look-a-likies in front of us. Other highlights were when he broke out the acoustic guitar and played that song with the glitter balls (told you I'm not a fan) and Cedar Room at the end. Spaceface also rocked and made me wish I had some Sub Sub stuff. All in all, a great gig. When I go see a band that I don't really know, and leave wanting to buy their albums, I know I've seen something worthy).
