No Time

Listened to the radio in the car. I was coming home from the supermarket. Despite it being February, it must have been nearly 14 degrees. I bought some spit roast chicken and some pre washed, pre prepared salad. On the radio was the charts. The hit parade. The top 40 best selling songs in the UK, sold in the past week.

Upon hearing this, I remembered the recent news with Apple and The Beatles. They finally agreed about the use of the name Apple and the Apple logo. This agreement means that The Beatles back catalogue is soon to be made available to download. The hit parade now is made up of CD singles and downloads sold. Thus, it is possible, if everyone downloads The Beatles albums, that they could take up every position on the top 40.

This in itself is a strange state of affairs. Earlier today, I listened to a podcast of an interview with Brian Eno. He said, during the late 60s, everyone had heard all the records that mattered. He likened it to 16th century writers who probably read all the books available, purely because there weren't so many books around at that time.

I then thought about time, and how our sense of timing is all screwed up. Warm winters are screwing up our biological calenders. Having The Beatles in the charts is screwing up our sense of generation. Even TV (there as websites where we can watch TV shows) has lost the sense of time. No episode to episode. No plot progression. You can have anything you want at anytime.

I got home and switched off the radio. I found a loaf of bread in the fridge. It expired on 3rd Feb. I inspected it, checked it for mould. I saw there was none so I decided I would toast it and made myself a sandwich. I thought about time while the bread was browning. I waited for the pop. It popped. I picked up the toast and I made my sandwich. I'm still thinking about time.
