The BBC is spreading itself too thinly, says Neil Midgley in the Daily Telegraph. And who am I to disagree.

I too am constantly surprised at the amount of trashy shows on the BBC. If I had my way, there would be no more shows involving antiques, cooking, house buying or talent/audition shows. It always surprises me when Bargain Hunt is followed by Cash in the Attic. It's the same bloody thing! We are being served duck a l'orange and then duck with orange sauce and then told to swallow the whole sticky lot.

Hopefully, this phone-in scandal will give the broadcasting corporation a much needed splash in the face. They don't need to compete with commercial broadcasters. They should follow Nintendo's Blue Ocean Strategy and search for clear waters of new and original programming. They effectively have a place so unique that they can, and should, wade, snorkel or deep sea dive without worrying about any competition. They shouldn't swallow the salt water of low ratings and just be a brand willing to strive for innovation and quality.

They should aim high, just because no else is. The BBC is the responsible broadcaster after all. It's time to do the mature thing.
