Book Thoughts

Just finished Paradise Lost. It has taken me over 6 months to read it. Was it worth it?

There are good things and some things I didn't really understand or like that much. I liked all the bits with Satan. Satan. What a brilliant character. He obviously kicks arse compared to Jesus. Jesus is a soppy yes-man. Satan is a ball-on-the-line, take no shit devil in devil's clothing. The fighting was good. Angels versus angels with swords and armour. Running battles in heaven. Glorious stuff.

Because of this, all the bits without Satan were a bit dull. I don't really care about those things. Bring Satan back and his self deluded gradeur and hate and black revenge. I liked the conversations between Adam and Eve. Eve's a bit weak though. Adam is a bit too knowing. Asked too many leading questions.

The references were annoying, merely due to the face I couldn't understand them. Lots of references to Greek mountains and Persian rivers, or something like that. I wish I had someone to explain it all to me.

So yeah, Milton. I suppose you should read it so you know what the fuss is all about. Heaven and hell and the bits in the middle.

You just need a decent edition with notes at the back. I recommend the Penguin Classics edition, edited by John Leonard.
