lonely, oh so lonely
finished eleanor rigby by douglas coupland and othello by william shakespeare. i'm re-reading othello and i have to return rigby soon to it's rightful owner. i'm now reading reading lolita in tehran by azar nafisi.
it's strange reading rigby. i always felt that the main character wasn't a woman but a man. is that weird? i never felt i was in a woman's head. was it because she wasn't a typical woman? in the book it goes on about how she is a typical woman. maybe i don't know what typical women are like. or maybe typical women are all like teenaged boys but without the frenzied music and bad clothes. maybe teenaged boys are like typical men. maybe there's nothing typical about it at all.
my first impression of othello is that iago is bad. he's bad for no reason except to be bad. he seems stuck in a groove to be bad and he can't do anything else. he also has an outrageous last line that made me want to throw the book at him. maybe he's just lonely.
the book i have has 4 shakespeare plays in it: othello, king lear, hamlet and macbeth. if all the villains of the plays all had a fight (i nominate iago, edmund, hamlet and macbeth) i think either hamlet would win (through sheer intellectualising and the sphere of his creative imagination combined with his black nihilism) or macbeth (through is famed combat skills, dogged faith in anything the witches predict and also dark grey nihilism). edmund would finish last because he needed so much help from the 2 sisters and he really only fooled his foolish dad and gung ho brother. iago would do well because his mask would never drop, not even in the bleakest moments but he would also refuse to fight to the last.
i nearly finished deception point by dan brown. still reading it in fast forward. i think the president just died but the sexy scientist is still safe with the rugged scientist.

keep on with the decpetion point posts - it'll save me from reading it. I'm in a catch 22 literary situation having just finished reading Ben Eltons latest and enjoyed it on many levels. Crikey me eh?
actually the president didn't die but his advisor did. i think delta 1 is alive but delta 3 is dead now. not sure about delta 2. the sexy scientist just had to swim in a sea full of hammerhead sharks (couldn't work out why) but the rugged scientist rescued her.
more soon!
